he Pocatello metropolitan area is home to about 64,000 people in Southeastern Idaho. With Idaho State University and several large industries, Pocatello serves as the educational and commercial center for Eastern Idaho. As a University town the population shows a wide cultural diversity. There are active and welcoming congregations serving all the major religious denominations.
The City of Pocatello is situated at an elevation of 4,450 feet above sea level in the moderately broad valley of the Portneuf River, a tributary of the Snake River. Rolling hills bordering Pocatello rise approximately 1,000 feet above the valley, while mountains within a few miles to the south reach elevations of 9,260 feet. Less than 100 miles to the northeast, the majestic Teton Mountains have peaks over 13,700 feet.
The weather is sunny and dry with an average July temperature of 72.4 degrees and an average winter temperature of 35.4 degrees. Average annual precipitation is 10-12 inches with 42.7 inches of snowfall. The city is located at about the same latitude as Chicago and New York City, and the same longitude as Phoenix.
Many beautiful recreational areas surround Pocatello. Skiing, hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, sailing, kayaking, rafting, fly fishing, golfing and sight-seeing are all within easy reach and offer uncrowded availability for outdoor recreation.
