he emergency room at Portneuf Medical Center is a very busy, full-service
level two trauma center, with two emergency room physicians covering
the service at the busy period. Residents are placed in the emergency
room from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. each afternoon. They see and
triage a portion of the ER patients themselves under the supervision
of the emergency room doctors. There is ample opportunity for
suturing, reduction of dislocations and fractures, casts and splint
placement, assisting with plastic procedures and additional management
of acutely ill medical and surgical patients. One month is required
in both the first and second year, with a slightly higher level
of responsibility and slightly longer hours in the second year.
Residents emerge from these rotations competent to staff small
outlying emergency rooms in hospitals that serve small communities
around Pocatello. These moonlighting experiences provide both
excellent clinical challenges to second and third year residents
with decent remuneration.
